Saturday Heritage Fairs: A New Way To Get Communities Talking
By John Coster:
Saturday Heritage Fairs provide a meeting point for individuals and community groups in the early stages of developing a heritage collection and those looking to grow an existing collection; to display what they have, seek feedback, find volunteers and people able to support them develop their heritage collection.
It’s become obvious to me that the sharing of news from different communities is no longer offering the necessary understanding for us all to live together. While there is more information than ever available through online digital media platforms for us to understand and accommodate the needs of different people, these channels are now used successfully by individuals determind to create disharmony and division, driven and encouraged by a toxic cabal of politicians, business and the media. Therefore, this focus on heritage and the sharing of stories offers a way to build understanding through shared experiences and memories.
There is also a developing Independent Heritage Network offering other local events, media content support, fundraising advice and a growing selection of helpful courses, e.g. How to begin cataloguing your collection etc.
These Saturday Heritage Fairs are also open to the public to explore and engage with free talks, showcases, and screenings on offer.
The next Saturday Heritage Fair will take place on 9th November 2024 at the Leicester Adult Education Centre.
